How to identify unidentifiable foreign coins?
Anyone know a good picture source for foreign coins? When I find foreign coins, I just type the obverse and reverse details into Wikipedia, and voila, I have my answer. However, I have come across several foreign coins not using Greek/Roman letters and numbers. I don't even have the characters on my keyboard. I would presume these are Hebrew or Arabic. Any thoughts?

Great site, but trying to find these unidentified coins is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I just can't find a starting place. I wish I could figure out how to uplink photos.

For starters, at least I can tell you the years.
Using the AH Hejira calendar, the first is from 1387, which is "our" 1967, the second is from 1379, which is "our" 1959.

Countries which use the AH calendar, which I've checked:
Afghanistan
Algeria
Bahrain
Egypt
Iran - coin one
Iraq - coin two
Jordan
Libya
Maldives
Morocco
Oman
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Sudan
Syria
Tunisia
Turkey
United Arab Emirates
Yemen
...there are probably several other countries...

I think the second one is from Jordan.

That gives me a starting point. Once I know what countries to search, it makes things easier. Both of these were found in NF Strings penny rolls. Thanks for your help.

Just checked Jordan. Nearly all their coins have some English on them as well as Arabic.AGgressive Metal wrote:I think the second one is from Jordan.
Is it possible this is some sort of token, and wouldn't be listed in the Krause book?

Just kidding, it is Iraqi. One Fils. Bronze, 2.5 grams. Mintage of 72,000,000 - so not worth much. 15 cents in fine. $1 uncirculated.

The darker one (second one) has the feel of a token. It is thin, like a US dime. It almost feels like plastic, but it sure looks like copper, and rings like it.

Dangit, you beat me to it!
Now what about the first one?
And I want that Iraqi for my bronze collection!

Sweet, Iraqi. It must have been brought over by a soldier.

Re: How to identify unidentifiable foreign coins?
Just thought of something. That first coin doesn't look old enough. So that got me thinking it might be using the SH (solar year) calendar. SH1387 is 2008 or 2009... a date which makes much more sense for how shiny that coin is!

Aluminum-bronze.

Re: How to identify unidentifiable foreign coins?
I could not find that exact Iranian coin in my Krause World Coin book.
One side looks to be a 250 rial and the other side looks like a 50 rial.
Someone help me out on that one.

Since I have seen you on realcent, you may also want to post on "Cerulean's "What is it?" foreign coin ID thread".
