1940 One Shilling
Would this coin have any silver content, ie, 40%, 50% or maybe more, or is it a cupro-nickel composition?
Thanks for you help.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Would this coin be worth more, then, for its numismatic value or the silver content? I'm a very conservative grader and I would say it to be in G to VG condition. Maybe better since I don't know what they grade it on.
Do you know the year these were no longer 50% silver?

A 1940 British coin in G or VG would be considered junk silver the same as a 1950s quarter in the US. The last year for silver in British circulating coins like shillings, two shilling, etc was 1946.

If you want to sell it, be sure to specify one further thing.
If the lion on the reverse is standing on a crown, with his tail up by his head, it's an English crest.
If he's "sitting" on the crown, holding a sword and a scepter, it's a Scottish crest.
Either one is relatively common, but still has that silver.
Hope that helps.

I made a thread in the "obsolete; europe" section about these types of coins for everyone's future reference.
