Cyprus Pound coins go obsolete today (Dec 31st)
The pre-Euro coins of Cyprus, the Cypriot Pound, are obsolete at the end of today, December 31st 2009. The banknotes are still exchangable (though no longer legal tender) at a rate of 0.58 Cypriot Pounds = 1 Euro until December 31st, 2017. Another national currency bites the dust. Darn you EU!!!!

All of the countries that have adopted the Euro have agreed that their national currencies will no longer be legal tender within a certain number of months of years after joining. BUT, each national central bank has discretion as to how long it will allow people to redeem coins and notes in exchange for Euros. Some countries, like Germany, allow unlimited redemption of both, so in theory you can convert Duestche Marks in 2100 if the Euro is still around.
The next group of coins and notes to become obsolete are French Franc notes on Feb. 17th, 2012. Also, Finnish and Italian coins and notes on February 29th, 2012.
