What is the best way to identify Asian coins

Post  Pennysaved on Sun Jan 03, 2010 9:16 pm

I picked up some Asian coins at the coin store but am having problems identifying them. I have my world coin book but there are so many coins to look through. Any easy ways to identify them?

Towards the back of the Krause Catalog of World Coins is a section called instant identifier. I prefer this site, http://worldcoingallery.com/index.php. Specifically this section, http://worldcoingallery.com/Inst-ID/page1.html.

After a while you will start seeing patterns (monarchs, national symbols, etc.). Asian coins can be a toughie.

How much does this Krause Catalog retail for? It sounds helpful, but I have a limited number of foreign coins that I find from time to time. Not sure if it would be worth buying or not.

They can be quite expensive. Every year or two, Krause comes out with separate catalogues for:
21st century
20th century
19th century
18th century
and so on... I would assume the older ones don't come out as often...
90% of your finds will be from one catalog. Some options:

1. Go to your local coin dealer and see if they will sell you their used store copy when they get the new year in.
2. Go to the library. Look up "Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins." Can't beat free! Or they may even have a book sale every once in a while.

Option three:
Post a picture of the coins here. You can place a bunch of 'em directly on a flatbed scanner and make one picture... then go to the link below, to learn how to put pics up:

I bet someone here can help identify / attribute the coins. Is Cerulean here yet? He had a great thread like this over on RealCent.
