French Francs as Bullion
From 1960 to 2000, the French half-franc, franc, and 2 franc coins were pure nickel. I see them as a great "bullion" coin to collect and hold on to. They also have a numismatic angle, as they have been replaced by the Euro and many have been redeemed and melted down. The weights are (I believe, from memory):
1/2 Franc: 4.5 grams
1 Franc: 6 grams
2 Francs: 7.5 grams
With nickel at $8 a pound, these are great little bullion pieces, imo.

I agree. Another of my favorites are the Dutch Guldens.
1 G: 6 grams.
2½ G: 10 grams.
The Netherlands Antilles versions are;
1 G: 9 grams.
2½ G: 14 grams.

Nice. At that price I would have bought every single one they had in the building. How many were you able to get?Pennysaved wrote:I picked up a bunch of Netherlands and Netherlands Antilles guilden at the coin store the other day 5 cents a piece.

I have found some French 1/2 Francs in penny rolls. Will have to start searching the junk bins at the coin shop. Probably could be had cheap. I think it would be difficult to obtain them in bulk though. I would imagine they are hard to find in quantity.

I picked up about 15 of each; not a lot.

Is the composition of a 5 francs from this same time period also pure nickel?
Thanks.

No, the 5 Franc is nickel-plated cupro-nickel.
